4 ways to keep arteries healthy and reduce plaque buildup, according to a cardiologist

In 1933, a Wisconsin farmer asked what was killing his cattle - the answer eventually led to warfarin

The story of warfarin began in 1933, when Wisconsin farmer Ed Carlson arrived at the University of Wisconsin asking why his cattle were dying after eating spoiled sweet clover. Researchers eventually traced the bleeding disorder to a chemical process involving coumarin, and in 1940 scientists at the university succeeded in synthesizing the key anticoagulant compound. The discovery led to a family of drugs later known as warfarin, a name created from WARF — the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation — and coumarin. By 1948, the drug had already been credited with saving a life, and in 1955 it gained national attention when President Dwight Eisenhower received it after suffering a heart attack. What began as a livestock mystery became both a powerful medical anticoagulant and one of the most unusual biochemical discoveries of the 20th century.
