A major 24-year study suggests that regularly eating flavonoid-rich foods, like apples, blueberries, and tea, may help protect against the physical and mental decline associated with aging. Published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the research followed over 86,000 adults aged 60 and older. People who consumed the most flavonoid-rich foods were up to 15% less likely to become frail, experience physical decline, or report poor mental health than those with the lowest intake. Flavonoids are natural compounds in plant foods with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Higher 'flavodiet' scores, based on the consumption of apples, berries, tea, red wine, and citrus, were linked to healthier aging, especially in women. For example, apples were associated with a 17% lower risk of frailty, while blueberries and red wine showed similarly strong benefits. Dietary shifts also mattered over time: women who drank more red wine had a 17% lower frailty risk, while cutting back on blueberries raised risk by 31%. According to researchers, these findings suggest that adding more flavonoid-rich foods to your diet may support healthier aging, no matter when you start.
